Cambridge Secondary (7-9) · Unit 9: Chemical Reactions

Question 27

Your teacher will give you samples of zinc, copper and iron metal, and some dilute hydrochloric acid. Work in groups. Plan an investigation to find out whether the same gaseous product forms when the different metals react with the acid. You need to plan how to test the three metals fairly, and describe each step you will take. Start by deciding what you expect will happen – your hypothesis.

Caution: Wear safety goggles when handling an acid. Read the hazard symbols on the bottle. Make sure you know how to handle an acid properly. Ask your teacher to check your plan. Make any necessary changes, then put on your safety goggles and disposable gloves, and carry out your investigation.

Write the steps in the method you will follow. This should include the following:
• How will you set up the equipment?
• What will you do to stay safe during the practical? For example, how much acid will you use and how will you transfer it to a test tube? How should you add metal and acid together?
