Question 28

Work in pairs or small groups.

Use Table 1.6 on pages 15 and 16 of your Student’s Book to help you if necessary. Go to the science laboratory with your teacher. You will learn to identify and handle different laboratory equipment.

Watch your teacher demonstrate how to use each piece of apparatus correctly. Then, carry out each task in the table below.

Place a tick (✓) in the last column to show you have done it correctly.

| | Apparatus | Task | Tick (✓) if you have done it correctly |
|---|---|---|---|
| a | Beaker | Fill a beaker with water up to the 200 cm³ mark (or other mark that your teacher tells you). | |
| b | Test tube | Place a test tube in the test tube rack. Fill half of the test tube with the water from the beaker in a. | |
| c | Measuring cylinder | Using the beaker, fill three measuring cylinders with water to these markings: 40 cm³, 20 cm³ and 15 cm³. Ensure that you measure the volume of water by placing your eyes level with the bottom of the meniscus, which is the curved surface of the water. Your teacher will show you how. | |
| d | Electronic balance | Put a dry beaker on the balance. Press the ‘zero’ (or ‘tare’) button to set the balance to 0 g. Use the spatula or measuring spoon to add 10 g of sand to the beaker. Add 40 cm³ of water from your measuring cylinder. | |
| e | Stirring rod | Stir the sand and water in the beaker using the stirring rod. | |
| f | Filter funnel and filter paper | Stand a filter funnel in a conical flask. Fold a piece of filter paper so that it fits into the funnel. Your teacher will show you how to do the folding. Then pour the mixture of sand and water into the filter funnel. Water will collect in the conical flask. | |
