Question 44
In Thailand’s Samut Prakan province, a small coastal village called Ban Khun Samut Chin has gradually been submerged by the sea (Figure 13.20). Scientists discovered that the village has lost between 1.1 km and 2.0 km of its shoreline since the 1950s. In addition to rising sea levels, the receding coastline is also due to the destruction of mangroves, which help protect coastal areas. These mangroves were cut down to make space for shrimp farms.
Look back at the question at the start of the chapter. What are some ways to slow down the receding coastline of the Ban Khun Samut Chin village?
