Cambridge Secondary (7-9) · Unit 12: Electrical Circuits

Question 77

Electrical circuits can make devices and home appliances more energy-efficient, which means that they use less electricity and last longer. Modern smart homes (Figure 12.53) link many of the circuits in home appliances and devices together to work as one system with intelligent control. Smart homes offer a modern and convenient way to enhance daily living. With features like remote control, energy efficiency and advanced security, smart homes provide convenience, safety and customisation to homeowners.

Imagine you are part of a team responsible for reducing energy consumption at your school. This not only leads to reduced energy consumption and costs but also helps add to environmental sustainability. You decide to investigate how to use smart technology that is usually used in a home environment at your school.

Work in groups to design a system that effectively reduces the amount of energy consumed at school.
- Investigate ways in which automation of smart thermostats, lighting systems, and appliances can improve energy efficiency and save money.
- Safety and security are improved with smart homes. How could you use sensors to monitor your school to make it a safe place for students, teachers and school staff?
- Explore how smart home technology can benefit learners or teachers with disabilities or mobility issues.
- How can your design be applied on a large scale? Describe or make a drawing.

Share your design with another group. Suggest improvements to your design based on their feedback.
