Try this at home to see how surface area affects the rate of reaction.
1. Fill two mugs with the same amount of water at room temperature.
2. Add a sugar cube to one mug and stir.
3. Start a timer or stopwatch as soon as the sugar is added into the water.
4. Stop the timer when all the sugar has dissolved.
5. Crush an identical sugar cube into granules (Figure 8.25) and repeat steps 2–4 with the other mug of water.
