Question 24

Work in pairs to carry out this activity. You will need 60 small cards or pieces of paper.
1 Divide the cards equally between you and your partner.
2 One of you will mark all the cards with an X to represent the X chromosomes in the female gamete.
3 The other will mark 15 cards with an X and 15 cards with a Y, to represent the X and Y chromosomes in the male gamete. This set of cards should then be shuffled thoroughly.
4 Arrange the sets of cards face down in front of each of you. Flip over the top card from both piles to enact a ‘fertilised egg’. Record the ‘gametes’ that appear and the sex of the ‘fertilised egg’.
5 Continue until all the cards have been used.

6 Answer the following questions.
Add the results of all the pairs in class. What is the percentage of male and female ‘babies’ created?
