Question 67

Although carbon is not a metal, it is useful to include it in the reactivity series as a reference element.

Under certain conditions, iron oxide is reacted with carbon to obtain iron.

iron oxide + carbon → iron + carbon dioxide

Magnesium oxide does not react with carbon.

“Carbon is more reactive than iron but not as reactive as magnesium.”
