Question 91
Every day, we throw away a large amount of rubbish or waste. This is often dumped in landfill sites or burnt in incinerators. Recycling is one way to reduce the amount of waste that goes to the landfill.
Imagine that you are a scientist in a recycling company in your town. You have been asked to build a machine for separating metal objects, such as tins (Figure 7.32) that can be recycled, from other waste items.
Work in groups to plan and draw a model for your machine. Discuss how your machine would work. Use these questions to help when coming up with your design. You may search the Internet or use other sources of information.
- What types of waste are commonly collected from households and schools?
- What types of metal objects can be recycled? What metal(s) is each object made of?
- What properties do the different types of waste have?
- What criteria should your machine have? For example, what functions and properties should it have? What materials should the parts of your machine be made of?
- How is waste separation done by the local authorities in your area?
- Compare your group’s design with those of the other groups in class.
- Does any part of your design need improvements? How would you improve it?
- How could your design be scaled up to sort the waste of your school or even of your town?
