Cambridge Secondary (7-9) · Unit 7: Genes and inheritance

Question 48

Work in a group to produce a short report about one of the steps by which scientists discovered what we know about DNA today. Combine the reports in a timeline display. Choose one step to research:
- 1860s: Gregor Mendel experiments on inheritance in pea plants.
- 1902: Walter Sutton and Theodor Boveri discover the importance of chromosomes in inheritance.
- 1920 to 1944: Frederick Griffith and Oswald Avery show that DNA is the genetic material.
- 1953: Rosalind Franklin, Francis Crick and James Watson work out the structure of DNA.
- 2001: The structure of all the DNA in human cells is worked out through the international Human Genome Project.
Use words, photographs and drawings; use the same paper size as the other groups. Your report should fit on one sheet. Include where the scientists worked, how they made the discovery, whether they worked alone or with others, how earlier discoveries helped, and how quickly/how they shared their discovery.
