Question 72
Building giant structures
You will need:
- poster-making equipment, such as coloured paper and/or card, glue, sticky tape, scissors, paper straws or wires to make covalent bonds, small polystyrene or foam balls or modelling materials to make particles such as atoms or ions.
Method
1 In a group of three, make models of the giant structures of sodium chloride, diamond and graphite. Each model should be labelled and have a list of its properties. Write an explanation of how the structure is linked to the properties of each of your giant structures.
2 Before you begin, discuss how you will construct your models. When you have completed the task, pass your work to another group to assess it.
