Question 42

Have you ever eaten sherbet powder? Do you know how it is made? Work in small groups to make your own sherbet powder.

1. In a dry beaker, mix one spatula measure of citric acid with one spatula measure of sodium hydrogen carbonate (baking soda).
2. To see how the mixture reacts with the liquid (saliva) in your mouth, add about 2 cm³ water to the mixture.
3. Watch what happens. Feel the bottom of the beaker.

Caution: Wear safety goggles. Do not eat or taste the sherbet powder made in class. Do not smell or taste other chemicals or solutions.

What type of reaction is it? How can you tell?
