Carry out the investigation using the apparatus shown, under teacher supervision. 1 Find and record the mass of the crucible and lid. 2 Add magnesium ribbon and record their combined mass. 3 Calculate the mass of magnesium. 4 Heat the crucible, lifting the lid briefly from time to time with tongs or a spatula to admit air without losing ash. Do not touch the hot crucible. When no more reaction occurs, allow it to cool. 5 Record the mass of the cool crucible, lid and contents. 6 Calculate the mass of the contents. 7 Calculate the difference between the original magnesium mass and the product mass.
