Question 29
Think like a scientist: Extracting metals using carbon. You need safety glasses, copper oxide powder, charcoal powder, a spatula, a test or boiling tube, a heatproof mat and a Bunsen burner. Wear safety glasses. Put a spatula of copper oxide in the tube. Add a spatula of charcoal on top; do not mix the powders. Under teacher supervision, heat the two layers strongly in a Bunsen flame for five minutes. Allow the tube to cool, examine where the layers meet and record observations. Carbon can only displace a metal less reactive than itself.
