Question 124
Emitting thermal energy by radiation. Work in groups of two or three to compare how different colours emit radiation.
You need three or more identical empty food or drink cans, matt/dull black, white and silver paint (other colours optional), three or more thermometers, hot water, measuring cylinder, funnel, timer and graph paper.
Paint three identical cans dull black, white and silver; allow the paint to dry until the next lesson. Measure the volume needed to fill a can to within about 1 cm of its top. Heat enough water for four cans (or one more than the number used), stopping at about 60 °C. Use the funnel to pour an equal volume into each can. Place a thermometer in each and record the temperature every two minutes.

Carry out the method to compare how the different coloured cans emit radiation.
