Question 57

Think like a scientist: Measuring heat and temperature. Work in groups of three or four. Use the apparatus shown. Put a known mass of water in the polystyrene cup; measure its starting temperature. Zero the joulemeter or record its starting reading. Switch on the immersion heater and timer. Stir just before each minute, and record water temperature and joulemeter reading every minute. Continue until the temperature rises by 10 °C, then switch off and let the heater cool. Do not touch the heater while switched on. Clamp it so it does not touch the cup bottom.

Question illustration

Most of the thermal energy from the immersion heater is transferred to increase the temperature of the water. List three other ways that thermal energy can be transferred in this investigation.
